Nature is the essence of my sculptures, not just a setting. I create art that harmonizes with the environment, embracing the imperfections and the transient beauty of the natural world.

ABOUT SCOTT

Raised in the diverse landscapes of Oregon, I have always been deeply connected to nature and the environment. My journey as a sculptor began at Portland State University, where I graduated in 1988 with a Bachelor of Science in Sports Psychology. It was here, under the influence of notable artists like Marie Rasmussen, James Hansen, Tom Hardy, Lawrence Halprin, and Lee Kelly, that my artistic vision began to take shape.

My approach to sculpture is deeply rooted in the philosophy that art should not only exist within its environment but also become an integral part of it. This conviction has guided my work, leading to creations that harmonize with their surroundings, using negative spaces to invite the environment to play a role in the artistic experience. This style is a reflection of my upbringing in Southern Oregon, where the dramatic and varied landscapes provided a rich tapestry of inspiration.

Throughout my career, I have had the privilege of working on major commissions that reflect my commitment to nature and community. These include the Antoinette and Mark O. Hatfield Fountain at Willamette University in 1990, Two Birds at the Oregon Historical Society Courtyard in 1991, Birds at Umpqua Community College in 1992, and the Presidential Seal at the FDR Memorial in Washington D.C. in 1997. Each piece is a testament to my belief in the power of art to uplift and inspire, featuring nature-oriented subject matter in a semi-abstract expression.

I believe that the raw, organic forms of my sculptures, combined with a greater geometric clarity, create a compelling contrast that emphasizes the beauty of the natural world. My work aims to engage viewers, encouraging both casual observation and deeper reflection. This is particularly evident in the recurring motif of birds in my sculptures, symbolizing freedom and aspiration.
